Visual Techniques
In this photo the automaton is being pictured about to write or draw, which is being observed by Hugo and Isabella. In this photo Brian Selznick places all the irrelevant objects to the side where he makes the audience focus on the two characters and the automaton but, mainly the table on which the automaton is beginning to write on effectively using his choice of shading and positioning to focus our eyes on the table and make it the salient object.
In this photo Selznick makes sure there is no eye contact between the viewer and the subjects this gives an idea to the reader of how intrigued the subjects are at the automaton and the situation at hand which gives the feeling of anticipation as to what the automaton will write or reveal to the characters.
With the way the Author has positioned us we feel as if we are in the situation with them experiencing their same emotions, thoughts and feelings.
